Forget Civil War. Annihilation is the series everyone should be reading. With the exception of the Adam Strange and the Space Ghost minis the space opera has all but died off in comics. Until recently, DC's space cowboys, Green Lantern, have spent most of his time on Earth with only short stints in space. Silver Surfer hasn't had a regular book in years. And recent attempts have come up short. I'm looking at you, "Rann-Thanagar War".

Now, I didn't collect all the build up titles for Annihilation. There were four, Nova, Super-Skrull, Ronan, and Silver Surfer. I only read Nova. I only picked up Nova because I've loved the character ever since I first saw him in his tighty-whites in "New Warriors". I was surprised to find that I was actually interested in the plot.

It seems a giant wave of energy has been unleashed destroying everything in it's path. Including the Nova Corps, Marvel's equivalent to DC's GL Corps. The culprit is, Annihilus, the insectoid dictator from the Negative Zone. He and his fleet of ships follow behind the wave picking of the survivors. His reason is the same as any other great space opera; he desires more power.

This series has everything, action, epic space battles, heroic deaths (other comic writers please take notes), sex and sensuality, and a seemingly unstoppable villain (Annihilus has taken down Galactus). Oh and the cherry on top! There is only three months until the wave hits Earth.

side note to slashers: I now want Super-Skrull/Ronan slash.
